Big and polished, but with the unmistakeable edge of pop rock below their sheen, Calm Collected are a band purpose-built for the endless summer that is their hometown of Perth. With the meaty rhythm section of Ben Cremer and Chris Gardiner, the driving guitar of Chad Lambert and Luke Ramljak and the soaring vocals of Tim Tan, Calm Collected have proven they have the necessary musical chops to hold their own in a genre that already prides itself on perfection.
Since the release of their sophomore EP, Calm Collected have been alight on commercial radio, scoring interviews and airplay from a wide range of stations, Calm Collected have zero expectations of slowing down. Calm Collected have proudly shared the stage with memorable acts such as Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (USA), Real Friends (USA), Neck Deep (UK), State Champs (USA), ILLY (AUS) and many more…
We caught up with Chris to see what’s on the cards for Calm Collected for 2018.
If your music was a person, what would their personality be like? Do you have any character that comes to mind?
Unfortunately, I can’t think of a character suited to the theme but their personality would reflect being loyal, honest and passionate. With our upcoming release, that is the theme we have based it around. ͞We’re Nothing If Not Honest is a reflection on ourselves, ensuring we’re happy with what we’re doing before anyone else.
What’s the plan for 2018?
The wheels are already in motion for 2018. Main focus is to release our upcoming EP, tour, make mistakes and learn from them. But most of all, don’t forget to be honest with ourselves and have fun.
What’s on your music bucket list?
Personally, on my music bucket list is to present the rest of Australia (and further) with our music. We played in Adelaide back in 2014 and were blown away with the response. The fact we still get requests from Adelaide fans to this very day to go back is surreal.
If you had to choose an album title as a quote to live by, which one would it be and why?
Only Revolutions by Biffy Clyro – to focus your life musically on aiming to write music that no one has heard or written before. Something unique and different. Something that represents you as an artist and a human being.
What is the most bizarre moment you’ve experienced during a performance?
The whole band’s most bizarre moment we witnessed was the hilarious moment our singer, Tim, fell through the gap between the stage and the fallbacks at one of our shows. We all couldn’t help but turn and laugh!
If you could perform in a concert with three other musicians/bands of your choosing, who would they be?
Don Broco, One Ok Rock and Lower Than Atlantis
What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment?
All of our playlists range from completely different types of genres. Mine personally at the moment consists from BTS to Enter Shikari to Queen!
If you could talk to your younger self, what advice would you give about the music industry?
Do what you want to do, don’t let outside opinions take priority of your music! Love your music first before anyone else.
What’s in your gig bag?
My gig bag consists of our complete in-ear monitor rig, a flight case of cables, my personal setup and merch. (For some silly reason I decided to take charge of our setup, what a dumb idea!)
Why do you use Audiofly IEMs?
Calm Collected began with Audiofly from myself. I was on the search for an upgrade for my current in-ears at the time. I had looked up a lot of other brands but none felt right. After stumbling upon a couple of bands wearing Audiofly, I thought I’d look it up and see what they had to offer! (…realised they were local too which was wonderful!) – After I picked up my AF1120s, I used them at rehearsal that evening and spoke highly to the guys about my new set of in-ear monitors!
