House of Shem is an Aotearoa (New Zealand) based harmony band started by two brothers, Te Omeka and Isaiah Perkins, and their father, the late and great Carl Perkins. The band embodies elements of roots reggae, pacific reggae and traditional Maori music with relatable song-writing that connects powerfully with not only New Zealand and Australia audiences but reggae listeners globally, attracting fans from all areas of the world. Having obtained two Platinum and Gold albums, Carl Perkins was also inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame with former band, The Herbs. House of Shem was the first ever Reggae band in Aotearoa to debut at number one on the day of release for their album, Island Vibration.
If your music was a person, what would their personality be like? Do you have any character that comes to mind?
HULK – It will just grow and grow and smash everything it touches, haha.
What’s the plan for 2018?
We are looking at releasing some new music, new tour and can’t wait.
What’s on your music bucket list?
Play a live gig with our children who are all wicked singers and musicians – they are just young from 13 years down to 1, hopefully next year we can take them on the road with us.
If you had to choose an album title as a quote to live by, which one would it be and why?
Our album Harmony, I think that sums up everything I would want to live by, Peace Love & Harmony.
What is the most bizarre moment you’ve experienced during a performance?
Probs going on stage in 2007 to a screaming crowd of maybe 10,000 people plus, and getting ready to start our first song and the whole stage just SHUT DOWN! All the lights, all the PA system, all the equipment everything – just went black! Freaky.
If you could perform in a concert with other musicians/bands of your choosing, who would they be?
Bob Marley, Tupac & Michael Jackson, Revolutionaries, I love the conscious message and the militant attitude but with a message of unity.
What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment?
Alborosie, Jesse Royal, Stephen Marley…Well the whole Marley family really. Really inspired by the Marley family – love them all, beautiful spirits they have and Dad had a close connection with Stephen Marley.
If you could talk to your younger self, what advice would you give about the music industry?
Think before you sign and watch who you put your trust in. Always think before you make decisions.
What’s in your gig bag?
Macbook, Audiofly IEMs & Go Pro.
Why do you use Audiofly IEMs?
Use them because they are top quality and sound amazing. And feel so comfy in the ear, not like a lot feel like they are gonna come out, these just sit in solid. Thanks guys!
