In 2015, the combination of Sophie Hopes, Matt Tanner, Ethan Darnell and Nick Vasey seized Australian rock fans by the scruff of their necks – winning triple j’s prestigious Unearthed Award, tearing down the main stage at Splendour In The Grass, claiming the WAMI for Best Rock Song, supporting the likes of The 1975, Kingswood and Luca Brasi, and releasing killer singles like ‘Suck’ and ‘I Don’t Think You Like Me.’ In 2017, they’ll be embarking on their first ever UK/European tour – including playing the Glastonbury Festival in June!
We caught up with their drummer, Ethan Darnell, to see what makes Tired Lion tick!
If your music was a person, what would their personality be like? Do you have any character that comes to mind? The character would have some bipolar disorder of sure but other than that, I reckon maybe some character off Daria.
What’s the plan for 2017? Get the album out and play all the songs that we have been dying to play off it live. We have some trips to Europe in the works, so more travelling and sitting on planes.
What’s on your music bucket list? Ahhhhh difficult! I don’t have one, but I would love to play Lollapalooza one day!
If you had to choose an album title as a quote to live by, which one would it be and why? “Melted” – Ty Segall. I reckon this would be rad because I could use it as a catch phrase. I know I’m completely changing the question, but I’m currently listening to the record, so it all makes sense. Melted could be my slang term for most things.
What is the most bizarre moment you’ve experienced during a performance? I remember one show a dude yelled out something completely gross to Sophie something sexual and disgusting. I remember being so shocked that someone would yell something like that, Sophie called him out and he was kicked out of the show as deserved.
If you could perform in a concert with three other musicians/bands of your choosing, who would they be? Just put me in the drum seat for a Limp Bizkit concert and I’d be stoked. We would have to travel back in time though, and it would have to be at the peak of their musical career.
What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment? Three artists I keep floating around is Froth, The Lemon Twigs and Slaves. All different sounding bands and records.
If you could talk to your younger self, what advice would you give about the music industry? Just to make decisions that will lead to your happiness – it all does matter if you aren’t happy so just do that.
What’s in your gig bag? For me, just the essentials. Sticks, snare, cymbals, laptop and my AudioFly AF 160’s.
Why do you use Audiofly IEMs? They work perfectly for my needs! I have had other brands in the past, and I have always found a fault in them. I also love the staff – they all love audio and getting the best product out to the public.
