Freshly announced as the winner of EXTRA® Support Acts with Alison Wonderland is one of Sydney’s emerging electronic duos, Yomi Twice, featuring Sam Lloyd and Sam Marynissen. With the phenomenal success of their latest track, Sold My Soul, and their plans to release more tracks before this year is up, we can expect big things from “your favourite gingers from Sydney!”

If your music was a person, what would their personality be like? Do you have any character that comes to mind?
Our music would have a split personality disorder, haha. At times, reflective, emotional and melancholic, the other side would be more triumphant, brave and bulletproof.
In the early days of the project, we had fleshed out a concept/story that revolved around a girl who lost herself in the world of Yomi, which is a Japanese underworld. We often think of her while we’re songwriting!
What’s the plan for 2018?
Plan is to keep getting more music out there! We’re stoked with how ‘Sold my soul’ has been received and we have more singles to release before the year is done. Also looking into playing some shows in the near future and we’re really excited for that. Long haired Sam plans to grow his hair longer, too!
What’s on your music bucket list?
That’s a big list! We have lots of goals for Yomi twice, both short term and long term.
But the bucket list…
Short Haired Sam:
- Playing at Splendour in the Grass!
- Selling out a headline show tour.
- Collab with Johnny Farnham.
Long Haired Sam:
- To release an album that makes me cry!
- Would LOVE to play Red Rocks one day, that place looks beautiful.
- Performing on stage with Julie Andrews would be grouse… Or even just a cheeky autograph. (I am the BIGGEST fan).
If you had to choose an album title as a quote to live by, which one would it be and why?
Short Haired Sam: Disclosure – ‘Settle’: Keep calm always and ride that wave called life.
Long Haired Sam: Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols…. Seriously, never mind the bollocks.
What is the most bizarre moment you’ve experienced during a performance?
Right before our performance for EXTRA Support Acts, Sam (lead singer’s) in-ear monitoring system was just playing back really loud static noise. We had no idea what was causing it until we realised it was because of all the wireless camera equipment on set, which was something we didn’t anticipate. We only had half an hour to set up but we ended up making a makeshift monitoring setup out of a foldback and a half-working IEM pack.

If you could perform in a concert with other musicians/bands of your choosing, who would they be?
Tough one! RUFUS DU SOL, Jungle Giants and NERO would all be high on the list.
What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment?
Short Haired Sam:
- Running Touch, My Hands
- KAYEX, 5:29
- Matt Corby, No Ordinary Life (INCREDIBLE writing on this one!)
Long Haired Sam:
- Billy Preston, Nothing From Nothing
- Raj Mahal, Cake
- Deadmau5 & Rob Swire, Monophobia
If you could talk to your younger self, what advice would you give about the music industry?
No one will give you what you want to achieve. Work hard for it and keep working hard. Maintain a humble attitude to everyone you run into. Finally, always remember why you started making music, because you love it!
What’s in your gig bag?
In our gig bag at the moment is a …. Roland SPD-sx, Novation Launchpad, Alesis 61 Key midi Keyboard, M Audio 49 key Midi Keyboard, A Focusrite Scarlett audio interface (nicknamed ‘Big Chut’) , Drum sticks, Audiofly AF160 IEMs x 2 , Fender Telecaster and an Ibanez bass guitar. It’s a great setup for us at the moment in terms of our shows.
Why do you use Audiofly IEMs?
The Audiofly IEMs provide a really well balanced audio output and a sense of clarity between the vibe on stage and our ability to hear exactly what we’re playing! In the context of a live show, all musicians will understand that this is super important when you’re trying to deliver the best performance you can. IEMs are essential for our live performance set up!
