After taking a year to write new music and tour their debut album ‘Atlas Shoulders’, Melbourne folk-rock duo Pierce Brothers are gearing up for their sophomore album.
With a smooth pop acoustic vibe and strong call backs to their folk/roots beginnings, Kanko is their first release of 2020. Kanko is the first new music released from Pierce Brothers since 2018, having toured across the globe playing arenas supporting Tash Sultana, as well as massive AAA festivals in North America, Europe, and Australia.
Having established themselves as an integral part of the folk, blues & roots community in Australia and abroad, the band of brothers have toured relentlessly – honing their craft and gaining fans across the globe as they go. The band’s music has grown with them over the years and has seen them release a top 15 ARIA debut album (Atlas Shoulders) and two Top 10 ARIA EPs (The Records Were Ours and Into The Dirt), receive over 10 million global streams, as well as over 1 million YouTube views.
If your music was a person, what would their personality be like? Do you have any character that comes to mind?
I personally like to think of our music more of an animal than a person. And that animal is a Labrador. Very excited, just wants to play. We pretty much want to give people that excited feeling at our shows. Makes the most sense to me.
What’s on your music bucket list?
If you had to choose an album title as a quote to live by, which one would it be and why?
- Definitely, Maybe
- Life is strange
- Rust Never Sleeps – this is probably my favourite. Don’t get complacent. Don’t stop. Oxidisation will get us all and it’s inevitable.
What is the most bizarre moment you’ve experienced during a performance?
We’ve had some pretty crazy experiences from our busking days for sure. Those days were wild! Probably the craziest thing we’ve ever seen was at Pinkpop. The lead singer from John Coffey was crowd surfing (standing) on peoples hands, and caught a beer thrown from the back of the tent and finished it. It went worldwide immediately and we were side stage to see it. Unbelievable. Its on YouTube look it up! Type in “John Coffey Beer.”
If you could perform in a concert with other musicians/bands of your choosing, who would they be?
- Pearl Jam
- Mumford & Sons
What’s on your Spotify playlist at the moment?
- Delta Riggs – Modern Pressure
- Lumineers – III
- The Black Keys – Lets Rock
- Dope Lemon – Big Smooth Cat
If you could talk to your younger self, what advice would you give about the music industry?
Do what feels right for you, not what the label or anyone else thinks. Stick to your guns! You’re RIGHT!
What tips/advice would you share with other artists?
What’s in your gig bag?
Noise cancelling headphones, laptop (a must for touring/travelling), strings on strings on strings, plenty of vocal zone, my Earth Bottle water bottle.
Why do you use Audiofly IEMs?
They’ve completely changed our set for the better. We play tighter, more in harmony, everything is better. They’re an Australian company and they’ve always looked out for emerging Australian acts like us.
