What does a normal day look like for you?
Not one day looks the same for me at the moment, but I do try to stick to as much of a routine as I can. My attempted routine consists of an early wake-up (5.15am in summer and 6.30am in winter), a gym session, lots and lots of emails (I swear our jobs are 95% emails these days!), some shooting, some editing, a lot of writing and possibly an evening event. I tend to do a lot of different things during the day as I always have a few projects on the go. Between my blog, freelance writing and freelance e-commerce management, there is always something different to do!
Which artist do you relate to and why?
Hmmmmmm good question! I have never really thought about that! Maybe someone like Matt Corby? Purely because we are the same age and we are both absolute babes (JOKES!). We are both of the year 1990, grew up coastal (which I totally believe influences who you grow up to be – amongst other things, it makes you grow up with a certain laid back vibe about you), have the same musical influences and have a lot of the same views on life.
What have been some high notes (highlights) in your journey?
Oh gosh, there are so many! I think one of the best moments for me was getting an email from an airline company out of the blue, asking me if they could send me to Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi! I remember waiting for a friend in a café and reading the email – I couldn’t contain myself and I just about screamed at my friend when she finally arrived. Another highlight would have to be getting a random email asking me to write an article for a high-profile publication which then turned in to an ongoing freelance writing job for me. Heck, even just proving to myself that I can be in control of my own career was a massive highlight.
What have been some low notes (challenges) in your journey?
Freelancing in general! It is so rewarding to freelance, but it is also a tough slog. There are a lot of luxuries you don’t get freelancing, but the ones you do get are totally worth it! It is also challenging trying to place a value on our industry; not for me, but for other people. Everyone knows that they need to pay attention to marketing and social media, but they still don’t see the value in it. It is a constant challenge to try and get it across to people that our work is actually essential and valuable to a brand.
When things get tough, which songs do you turn to for inspiration/motivation?
I always throw on a bit of The Beautiful Girls. I have been listening to them since I was in high school and they never fail to take me away to another place and calm me down. La Mar is my all-time favourite song, but Periscopes is a more cheerful ‘life me up’ sort of song.
How does music keep you motivated?
To me, music is life. It makes me so emotional and that is all I need as motivation. If I put on a song with good memories attached to it, you can’t stop me from smiling, dancing and singing at the top of my lungs. I act similarly if it is just an absolute banger of a song too. I am totally motivated and energized by being in a good mood.
What tips can you share for creating Insta-worthy content?
I think the most important thing to me is to just be genuine. You can tell when someone tries too hard to be something they are not, and nobody likes fake! Following that, make sure you pay attention to how you are framing a photo, the lighting and what you choose as the focal point of the photo.
What advice can you give for those interested in pursuing a career in digital media?
Be prepared to work hard! Like any industry that seems rather desirable to be in, it takes a lot of hard work to actually make it work for you. Don’t be disillusioned into thinking that it is all sparkles and rainbows because it most definitely is not! But the good times do outweigh the bad, so don’t stress 😉
What’s currently playing on your Spotify?
Oooooph, so much! My music taste is super eclectic but I think the most common thread is that it is all music that evokes a strong emotion (most of it evokes happiness if I am honest). I have been listening to a lot of Electric Fields (two feminine Indigenous brothers with AMAZING voices and talent), Vallis Alps, Petit Biscuit, Ziggy Alberts, Northeast Party House, Vance Joy, Gomez, Flight Facilities, Thundamentals… do you need me to go on???
